Essien backs current Chelsea team for glory

Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien is confident the current Chelsea side will be a success like the 2004/2005 team, he also added that itÂ’s a pleasure watching them and believes the fans are enjoying it too.

The 2004/2005 Chelsea side went on to win a lot of silverware domestically and in Europe till the evolution of a new side, they won three Premier League titles, four FA cup trophies, one League cup, FA Community Shield and UEFA Champions League.

Michael Essien, who was part of that batch, told Gary Al-Smith during an exclusive interview for the Guardian newspaper.

“This team will get there at some point but they are a delight to watch and I am sure Chelsea fans are loving their play,” the Ghanaian claimed.

The 32-year-old claimed that the current crop of players are different from the old side. This is because the new team has flair more than the 2004/2005 side.

“It’s a totally different team (to our team) as we were a destructive team. We had some flair players but not as many as the current team, and what we did well was destroy teams and made sure you never had a sniff of a chance.”

The bisonÂ’ cautioned the team about their position and against complacency in the Premier League, Chelsea tops the Barclays Premier League with 36 points after 14 games.

“It’s too early to say they are racing to the Premier League but they have put themselves in a good position. I am sure they know nothing is won in December so they will keep going till the end.”

The versatile midfielder played for Chelsea from 2005-2010, he is remembered for his stunning left-footed volley in the second leg of the 2009 UEFA Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.
