Porto vs Chelsea – Match Preview

Preview

Tomorrow Chelsea continue their quest for Champions League glory in match week 2. Chelsea have flown to Portugal to play the 27 time domestic league winners, Porto.

Mourinho returns to the club he managed between 2002-2004. In that time he won the: Primeira Liga (2002–03, 2003–04), Taça de Portugal (2002–03), Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira (2003), UEFA Champions League (2003–04) and UEFA Cup (2002–03). He is a very popular figure amongst their fans as it was the club Mourinho established himself amongst Europe’s elite managers.

It’s an important fixture tomorrow for Chelsea for a couple of reasons. Chelsea obviously want to top the group and it’s something you’d expect us to do. A win tomorrow will put Chelsea in clear control of the group and in a very good position to go on to achieve their aim in the group stage. After disappointment at Newcastle, we need to put in a positive display and get a good result to regain confidence going into this weekends game vs Southampton. At the end of the match, 2-2 was a fairly good result as we went 2-0 down, however it’s not a result you’d take before the match.

Hopefully tomorrow Chelsea will get back to winning ways. Come on Chelsea!

Porto are currently playing well, they are 1st in the Portuguese top division,  Primeira Liga. In their last 5 games in all competitions they’ve won 3 and drawn 2. This includes a 1-0 home win over Benfica.

In Chelsea’s last 5 games they have won 3, drawn 1 and lost 1. Chelsea won their opening Champions League game 4-0, unlike Porto who drew 2-2 with Dynamo Kyiv.

Chelsea and Porto have met 6 times overall in the two clubs history. Both have had 3 matches each in their respective countries against the other team. This has seen Chelsea win 4. Porto have beat us just once. There has obviously been one draw too.

The 3 matches in Portugal have ended in a Chelsea win, a Porto win and a draw.

Chelsea have played Portuguese opposition 11 times. We have a good record against them winning 9 , drawing 1 and losing 1.

Team news

Mourinho said after our draw with Newcastle that he could of made 6 substitutions at half time if he could. He also said there were a few poor individual performances in our side, therefore we may see a few changes. Chelsea have a fully fit squad going into the game apart from Thibaut Courtois; who is making good progress doing rehabilitation work at our training ground. Diego Costa is also eligible to play as his suspension only stands in domestic competition, he’s expected the lead the line upfront. Willian and Ramires put in impressive displays when coming on vs Newcastle, both will be pushing for a starting spot. Terry has also missed our last two Premier League games, he’s another player who will be pushing for a start with Mourinho expected to bring in some experience at the back for the game.

For Porto, Andre Silva will miss the game due an ankle injury. He has been ruled out for a month. Yacine Brahimi is a doubt for the game as he sustained a knee injury last weekend and has missed some training sessions this week.
