Chelsea dealt transfer blow as German defender is set to reject interest

Antonio Rudiger is set to reject interest from Chelsea and remain at Roma in January, according to La Gazzetta Dello Sport, as reported by CalcioMercato.

CalcioMercato cite today’s edition of the Italian paper which claims that Antonio Conte is an admirer of Rudiger, but the German wants to stay at the Serie A giants.

Rudiger has been continually linked to the Blues in recent months, with the Express reporting in the summer that Conte was hoping to sign him then but a potential move was scuppered by his ACL rupture.

The Italian may now see that as a blessing in disguise, as David Luiz was subsequently signed and has been one of our best players so far this season. Kurt Zouma is also set to return from injury, having made it through 90 minutes for the Chelsea development side unscathed.

It’s likely that we will look for further defensive reinforcements as Conte looks to find the final pieces of his 3-4-3 jigsaw. It does, though, appear that Rudiger is no longer a viable option.
