Chelsea defender and fan favourite Cesar Azpilicueta has strongly come out against the idea that his club need the Champions League to sign the best players.
When the Blues have been linked with top level players in the last few weeks it’s been a common theme to write off those potential moves because of the idea that top players won’t accept missing out on European competition.
But as we saw with players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang moving to Arsenal, there are cases where it can happen, and Azpi is sure that Chelsea provide more than enough temptation even with just the Europa League on offer.
“Of course big players will still want to come to Chelsea because we win lots of silverware,” the Spain international is quoted as saying by the Evening Standard.
“I have no doubt that the club will get a squad that can compete to win for trophies. I am sure that will happen.”
Let’s hope he’s right. Of course he’s unlikely to say anything different, but there are a series of very important dominoes here.
Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois will both likely leave unless we convince them we’re still competing for the top players.
And those players in turn are less likely to join us if we let those big stars go.
We’re in a difficult place right now, and not having a manager isn’t helping.
