There are rumours floating around the internet today that Gonzalo Higuain is a target for Chelsea, one that Maurizio Sarri will demand if he comes to the club.
This makes so little sense that you only have to have paid a modicum of attention to Chelsea’s recent transfer dealings to know that it’s out of the question.
Firstly, and most importantly, Higuain would cost a boatload of money. The Old Lady paid £75m+ for him a few years ago, and would be looking for a sum not too much smaller. Chelsea just don’t pay that much money these days, if you hadn’t noticed.
Secondly, the Argentine is 31 in December. Chelsea may not spend big that often, but when they do it’s on players under 25. They won’t spend more than a few million on an asset depreciating as fast as Higuain.
Thirdly, the Sarri connection doesn’t make much sense. He doesn’t fit that style of football nearly as well as say, Dries Mertens, who would be much more attainable anyway.
If Sarri does come, expect Mertens to become a solid favourite to join the Blues.
