Chelsea are interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen’s full back Benjamin Henrichs, according to reports in the Sun.
The 21 year old has worked his way into the team after two seasons hard work, and the paper claim that while he signed a new deal last summer, it contains a £31m (€35m) release clause that will let the defender go if that sum is offered by another club.
It’s a huge amount to pay for a still young and relatively unproven player – similar to what the Blues forked out for Antonio Rudiger last summer, a defender with significant international and European experience – but that’s just the way the market is going.
Chelsea’s top option at right back at the moment is Victor Moses, who is backed up by Davide Zappacosta. Neither are totally convincing, and it’s perhaps not a surprise that the club are still looking for a long term upgrade in that area.
