David Luiz has had a pretty mad couple of years. He arrived at Chelsea as a desperate last minute deadline day signing, one that received a lot of criticism – including from Chelsea fans.
He then went on to have a superb season in Antonio Conte’s back three, playmaking from the middle as the Blues stormed to the title.
This term has seen another reverse, with the Brazilian losing his place in the team, before suffering an injury that has kept him out since the early spring.
Conte has clearly made his mind up on the former PSG man, but his future lies in the hands of whoever takes the reins this summer.
Will they look at Luiz and see a leader and a quality player, or will they see a reckless, undisciplined defender whose best days are behind him?
Only time will tell, but it’s hard to see him being a perfect match for Maurizio Sarri’s rigid tactical structure, especially given the other options available in that position.
