“The application of the players is better than before” – Sarri confesses to issues with effort in Chelsea training

Given the events of the weekend, where his own goalkeeper refused to be substituted and was then fined, you’d think that Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri is in a bad way. Instead, he’s insisting that everything is sweetness and light at Stamford Bridge.

“The goalkeeper is not a problem. He made a big mistake, but he is really a very nice boy. There is only one difficulty: the results,” Sarri said in quotes carried by Goal.com.

“The atmosphere in the training ground is now very good. The application of the players is better than before.”

Maybe you think we’ve gone too far to say that these are “issues”? We don’t think so.

Sarri’s point is only that things in training are not deteriorating as results get worse. We appreciate that. But, intentional or not, he has damned the “application” of the players in previous sessions.

Well, at least it’s better than before. At least, by admitting the players weren’t applying themselves before, he’s admitting that the players are now.

Who knows? Perhaps with players trying harder, we might achieve more? We’re no Pep Guardiola, but we’d say that trying to learn a new way of playing might require a bit of “application”, as Maurizio so nicely put it.
