Chelsea boss explains why Marcos Alonso’s bad form came at the right moment

It’s not often you hear managers openly admitting that their players played badly, let alone hear them talking about their players being in a bad run.

But then again Maurizio Sarri is not most managers.

His press conference style is totally unorthodox, and pretty relaxed. When asked about Marcos Alonso’s recent dip in form he didn’t even try to deny it, instead just focusing on the good things about that problem.

“You have to accept that a player cannot stay at the top of his physical condition and mental condition for 11 months,” Sarri said in quotes carried by ESPN.

“So we were lucky because, in that period, we had a very good moment for Emerson,” he went on.

Many Blues fans were bewildered to see the Spaniard back in the starting XI to face Spurs, especially after the praise Emerson got from his manager at the weekend. Still, for now we can just assume that he was being rested, and will be restored to the team tomorrow, despite Alonso’s impressive efforts against Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Then again, if Alonso plays like he did against Spurs, we won’t have a problem either.
