It was confirmed today that Chelsea had agreed a deal with Real Madrid to sign Mateo Kovacic permanently, despite the transfer ban affecting the club.
The reason for that is that he has been on loan at the club this season, and so is considered a Chelsea player still for registration purposes.
It’s a sneaky loophole, but we’ll take what we can get.

It has caused some debate among Chelsea fans though, with many doubting whether he’s worth the reported 40m sterling we’re set to fork out.
For a lot of people, the real issue is not the money however. It’s how his presence will affect the rest of the team. With N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Danny Drinkwater, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Mason Mount all set to be battling for time next season, it seems detrimental to the fates of the two home grown favorites in there that Kovacic has been signed.
Then again, with Frank Lampard in charge, who knows how things will change? Lampard knows Mount’s level better than anyone, having coached him last year. If he thinks he’s not ready to be a full time player yet, we have to take his word for it.
