The Sun are today linking Chelsea’s Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic with Inter Milan.
The Real Madrid man has spent a season on loan in London, and while he had some bright spells, his lack of decisiveness in the final third ended up frustrating a lot of fans in the end.
Now the papers say that we’re not keen on paying the rumoured £26m purchase clause in his deal, allowing our old boss Antonio Conte to move in to take Kovacic back to his former club.
If it’s true that we don’t want to cough up, we can definitely see him going to Inter. He played there before, speaks Italian and only left because it was Real Madrid who came in for him. It would be a smart move.
The only thing we can see stopping it is Chelsea’s transfer ban. If we can’t sign anyone else, we will imagine us fighting tooth and nail to keep Kovacic on for at least another year, even if that means paying his clause and selling him in a year.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s injury has made keeping central midfielders on the books a top priority.
