Petr Cech’s loan challenge shows how Chelsea have failed on sporting director front

Oliver Harbord of Football.London’s piece on that website today outlines what Petr Cech will be doing in his first months in the job if he arrives, as expected, to be Chelsea’s director of football this summer.

One of the tasks that Harbord gives him is “rating the loanees”. He cites the 42 players currently out on loan who Cech will need to pick through on his arrival.

Unless he’s really been paying close attention to Leganes and Atalanta this season, he will have his work cut out. It seems odd that years of these players’ loan and youth careers may now be assessed in one summer.

That’s why it’s so much better to appoint from within the club. Cech is a smart guy and can work with the loan coordinator Eddie Newton to work out who can help whoever is in charge next season. But it’s still a tall order, and a shame the players hard work may get missed out in a busy summer.

Once Cech has been in place for a few years, it will be much easier for him to keep track of our flabby legions of ceded players. This first summer will be a baptism of fire.Petr Cech’s loan challenge this summer shows how Chelsea have failed on sporting director front
