Chelsea have a young and inexperienced team. That’s the entire narrative of this season. But this week, they went to Amsterdam and beat Ajax, the previous holders of the crown of “best young team around.” Does that mean we get the title now?
That’s the question that Pat Nevin asks in his column on the Chelsea website this week. It’s kind of hard to fault his logic. Ajax were a very very good team last year, and while they did lose two of their stars, they are still an elite team.
And we outplayed then, with a similar average age on our side. If we do it again at home in a couple of weeks, people will really have to start taking us seriously in the Champions League this season.
Until now we’ve been written off as a fun sideshow, and we may still end up being that, but if we can beat an Ajax team that made such a splash last year, we can give anyone a serious test.
