Chelsea’s midfield had the technical ability against Man Utd but no creativity

Chelsea lost 2-1 against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup last night in a match that ended The Blues 7 game winning streak.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set his side up in a man marking defensive unit that left no Chelsea player with any space all over the park.

His tactics paid off last night with them once again taking their chances.

However, United only managed 3 shots on target (BBC), 2 of those were the set pieces that got the goals. So it was more that Chelsea were poor and unable to break them down, that caused the result.

The Blues had a massive 65% possession, but only managed 2 shots on target, 1 of which was a fantastic goal from Michy Batshauyi. That says it all.

Frank Lampard handed deserved starts to Marc Guehi and Billy Gimlour from the academy. Guehi had a great game at centre back and Gilmour was bright on occasion and didn’t do a lot wrong.

However, the midfield 3 with Gilmour, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic proved a dynamic that doesn’t really work together.

They are three very good technical players who are all better playing deeper, meaning none of the 3 had that attacking prowess or creativity to help Chelsea in the attacking third.

This mean’t everything was reliant on Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi to create anything, and they both had games to forget.

It’s another lesson learned for Lampard and his staff.
