Rio Ferdinand has been on TV talking about his increasing regard for Tammy Abraham, after the Chelsea striker scored the opening goal for Chelsea against Lille.
Chelsea’s new number 9 now has 8 goals in 11 games, and is beginning to turn heads all over.
In quotes carried by the Daily Mail, taken from Ferdinand’s punditry on BT Sport covering the game, he was full of praise, including one particularly flattering comparison.
“I saw elements in Tammy’s game today that I hadn’t seen as much that I’d have liked to. His hold-up play, coming to the ball and bringing others into play,” Rio said of the breakout forward.
“First half, one ball went up to him, Didier Drogba-esque, chests it down for someone, runs on for the next phase – I think he’s developing nicely,” he went on.
“He’s scoring goals, he’s scoring different types of goals and I think he’s a threat.”
Those are big words from the former Man U man – let’s not forget the number of times he went up against our legendary striker in battling tussles through the last decade. If anyone knows Drogba’s game, it’s Rio.
Tammy certainly has shown the eye for goal that Drogba had, and in flashes he’s had the brilliant physicality and hold up play. He’s a different player though, more of a poacher at times, but as time goes by his play outside the area is coming on leaps and bounds.
