Frank Lampard reveals he turned down pre-season advances for ‘fantastic’ defender

Frank Lampard arrived at Chelsea this summer and the club were banned from signing players. But that didn’t stop him allowing David Luiz to leave the club.

Lampard knew that he had perfect cover for Luiz in the shape of Andreas Christensen, Fikayo Tomori, Anotonio Rudiger, and Kurt Zouma.

He also knew that ts was highly important that he kept Zouma at the club.

Goal report that the Blues manager turned down advances from Everton to sign Zouma on a permanent deal this summer.

The Toffees manager Marco Silva had Zouma on loan last season and he ended up becoming one of their most important players, so it was understandable that he wanted him back there.

But Lampard point blankly refused, and now Zouma has become an important player for him. In fact, he is playing so well in a partnership with Tomori, it is hard to see how Christensen or Rudiger will get back in.

As Goal report, Lampard said:

“He [Zouma] has been fantastic.

“There was a belief that I had in Kurt because there was interest in the summer after we all know he had a very good loan at Everton last year.

“But I believed in him as I believed in Tomori – that is why I made the decisions I made pre-season in terms of where we were going to look defensively.

“It has been nice to get some stability, albeit because of injuries, between him and Fikayo in the last games.

“It has been good to get them playing together to see the little bond they are getting on and off the pitch. It is a nice little story and it must continue, I suppose.

“Kurt is one of those players, as I mentioned, who just gets on with it. I think he is well-intentioned. He wants to do well, as they all do, and he is working hard and playing well.”
