BT Sport had two former West Ham boys on their coverage of the game last night, and both were full of praise for Frank Lampard’s team, and each other, as it turned out.
We had only just recovered from Rio Ferdinand comparing Tammy Abraham with Didier Drogba it the studio, when Cole launched a complementary broadside of compliments that compared Chelsea’s standout young defender Fikayo Tomori to Rio himself.
“He was different class tonight. He’s been Chelsea’s best performer for the last two or three games. Like a young Rio Ferdinand,” Cole said in quotes carried by the Sun.
Rio was one of his generation’s best defenders, so it’s a stretch at this stage, but there’s no deny the similarities we saw between the two. The way that Tomori just oozes class when he brings the ball out of the back is so reminiscent of Ferdinand, and if anything he’s even quicker than the former England defender.
Let’s hope that people are still making comparisons like this in 8 months. If so… we might just be competing for some silverware.
