Chelsea are preparing to take on Lille in the group stages of the Champions League this evening, and there is one player who will be lining up against them who might well have been a Chelsea player back in 2017.
Renato Sanches was the subject of bid from Antonio Conte’s Chelsea back in July 2017 when he was playing for Bayern Munich, as reported at the time by The Telegraph.
The Blues were only offering a loan deal, but at the time, the then 19-year old Sanches was a very highly rated talent in world football, so Chelsea might have looked to sign him permanently.
Tonight, his new side Lille are hosting Chelsea, and Sanches will be looking to make an impression on the club that once wanted to sign him.
The Portuguese international will also want to show what he can do after a failed loan move in the Premier League with Swansea in the same season that Chelsea made their bid.
