Why Marcos Alonso could be playing for Chelsea future against Newcastle

Marcos Alonso goes into tomorrow’s game with Newcastle with his Chelsea career on the line.

Of course that’s being overdramatic, but there’s a simple way to make that case. Firstly, consider that after preseason, Emerson Palmieri has impressed Frank Lampard enough to be first choice left back.

Alonso has come into the team since Palmieri’s injury and done well. But he has never been first choice for Lampard.

Now consider that Emerson is fit to return next week. The defender is reportedly going to start in Amsterdam against Ajax. That means Alonso starts today, and assuming he has to impress to keep his place, the pressure is on.

Then you consider that Alonso was linked with a transfer away from Stamford Bridge this summer after losing his place this season. Surely, losing his spot to Emerson twice in a row would spell the end for him at the club?

It’s a stretch, but the logic is there. If he has a stinker and is replaced in the next Premier League game, he will be a big step closer to the exit.
