Mason Mount started the season really brightly for Chelsea, but has since faded into the background a little.
His last few games have been quit by his standards, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been a great influence overall on the team, pressing high up and creating chances even in games where he’s been shackled by opposing markers.
Yesterday was a great example. Largely squeezed out in a congested midfield, the midfielder found it tough to find space playing in the midfield 3 rather than on the left as he was earlier in the season.
But despite a quiet game, he still came up big when it counted, playing a perfect whipped cross into the dangerzone which left the keeper stranded and allowed Christian Pulisic to head home.
It was a vital contribution, and the kind that Mason is making regularly this season. Even in his quietermoments, he still ends up making the difference.
