The Daily Mail today hailed Josh Sargent as the “next Christian Pulisic”, just a couple of days after the original Pulsic made his breakthrough.
The media never waits long before crowning its new darlings, and this is proving to be no exception. Just a week ago everyone was concerned with the fact that former Borussia Dortmund man CP coudn’t get in Frank Lampard’s team.
Now after one game, and a hattrick, to be fair, it seems everyone wants the next big thing already.
Sargent is on a similar trajectory to Pulisic, having moved to Germany to make his name in “soccer”. The difference is that Pulisic proved himself with a couple of great years as a teenager at Dortmund. Sargent, while promising, hasn’t accumulated the same volume of top class games at the same age yet.
He may have the potential to be as good, but Pulisic has Champions League pedigree, and now, a Premier League hattrick. Come back to us when you’ve managed that, Josh.
Hopefully, now Christian can relax knowing that the pressure to perform is shifting to the next man up.
