Sell two first team players and bring in Leicester star – how Frank Lampard can create addition by subtraction this summer

The Metro have today picked up on rumours linking Chelsea left back Emerson Palmieri with a transfer to Juventus to join up with Maurizio Sarri, his former boss at Stamford Bridge.

Add that to the rumours that rattled on all summer in places like the Daily Express that Marcos Alonso would be heading back to Spain to join Atletico Madrid, and you’ve got quite the conundrum.

It seems likely that one will leave this summer, whichever feels they need to move to get more minutes, in all likelihood.

But is there a situation where we would sell both? It’s unlikely, but not impossible. We’ve already seen Frank Lampard give young Ian Maatesen from the academy a chance. If he plays more this season and impresses, is there a chance that Lamps could trust him as the primary backup next season, and use a new signing – say Ben Chilwell – as first choice?

Sell the two incumbents and the Leicester player would pretty much pay for himself. It would mean more emphasis on more young English talent, and probably save us some money on wages too. What’s not to like?
