Chelsea were beaten 2-1 by Man U at home last night, thanks in (major) part to a penalty awarded for a Marcos Alonso foul on Dan James.
There did appear to be some contact, but probably not enough for a penalty in our opinion, and James went down like a sack of potatoes.
On BeIn Sport, the presenter and the head pundit on Carabao duty argued about whether it was a pen or not, with the pundit raging that “this is what is wrong with the game” when told that the shred of contact on James was enough for a penalty.
That’s a little over the top… but he’s not far off. Penalties change games, and shouldn’t be given away so easily.
