Teams always look to the captain in times of struggle, it’s one of their main roles in any squad, and with Chelsea losing another home banker to Southampton and suddenly looking in a bad way, it’s natural that club captain Cesar Azpilicueta stepped up to write the column on the club’s official website to keep spirits up.
One thing he writes about ahead of tomorrow’s game with Arsenal is the relationship he had with David Luiz as they played together for many years at the club.
Azpi was full of praise for his old teammate:
“When I arrived at Chelsea David was here, then he left for PSG, then he came back and he is a player who was very important for Chelsea as part of the squad which won the Champions League, two Europa Leagues, the Premier League with Antonio Conte, but we know football changes and players move here and there and now he has started a new chapter for him at Arsenal,” the right back said.
“On Sunday he is going to be a rival and we are going to fight for our teams.” he continued.
There may not be bad blood between Luiz and his old colleagues, but one senses there might be an issue between him and Frank Lampard, who was so willing to let him go on transfer deadline day.
We’ll find out in the game most likely – Luiz is never one to hide his emotion, and if he feels he needs revenge against Chelsea, he will make sure everyone knows it.
It’s up to Azpi to stop him.
