After a great win against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, Chelsea lost to Southampton at home, prompting another post mortem, and another reversal in the direction that pundits’ thinking was going.
On ESPN they broke down the whole thing, with all the pundits having their own take on what’s going right or wrong.
While most focused on the team, Gab Marcotti pointed to one individual in particular. He noted that Tammy Abraham has played “a bazillion minutes” this season, and was bound to have a slowdown at some point.
You can see the full clip here, with Gab’s answer coming after around 3 minutes.
He’s got a great point. Abraham has been instrumental for our success all year without doubt, and had maybe his best game of all on Sunday against Spurs, but he can’t be expected to do that twice a week all season.
In reality, his bad games have come more from a lack of service than a lack of running on his part, but it all adds up, and some cover for him is a January priority.
