Chelsea were embarrassed at home once again yesterday in a Boxing Day match they will be keen to forget.
Premier League strugglers Southampton came to Stamford Bridge and not only went away with all three points, but didn’t even concede a goal and scored two themselves.
Frank Lampard’s team were very poor and a total contrast to the team and the performance from last week when they beat Tottenhma 2-0 in their own back yard.
Lampard has a lot of work to do this season to keep Chelsea in the top 4, with the chasing pack getting closer.
The Blues would have expected a fight on their hands to make top 4 at the start of the season, especially after not being able to sign players.
However, next week they have the opportunity to help their top 4 push by adding some quality in the January transfer market.
Lampard has confirmed that they will need to be looking at adding players next month if they are to improve.
In an interview with Talk Sport, Lampard was asked whether he will attempt to solve Chelsea’s poor home form with training ground work or new signings in January, Lampard said:
“It takes both in terms of the big picture for a club like us.
“We work on the training ground, but the questions of the players are, in these kind of games which we’re controlling, can we score goals?
“Because that makes the feeling of the counter-attack not so dangerous. When it stays 0-0 it feels dangerous.
“So it’s something we’ll have to look at and always.”
