It’s crazy to think that just a few months ago, Chelsea seemed so well stocked at left back.
Emerson was in the team and playing well, Marcos Alonso – a star of the team in the very recent past – was his backup, and we had Ian Maatsen coming in from the youth team to play in the cups.
The idea we were going to try and sign another player in the position was absurd.
But things have changed dramatically since then. Emerson got injured, and upon his return has seen his form fall off a cliff. In his absence Marcos Alonso came in and put in some horror show performances himself, to the extent that Cesar Azpilicueta was played on the left in some games.
Overall, the way is now totally clear for a major buy in that position, and it’s feasible to imagine both Alonso and Emerson leaving in the next 12 months.
