It’s the time of year in the Premier League when rotation becomes important, and as a player with tons of top level experience Frank Lampard knows that better than anyone.
He mentioned in his press conference ahead of this game that Cesar Azpilicueta had picked up a knock, and while the Spaniard is probably still keen (and able) to play, Lampard isn’t going to take any risks. This is a great opportunity to rest the marathon man, and he’s got a superb replacement ready to go in Reece James.
James hasn’t started for a couple of games, and will be absolutely bursting to get out there and perform.
Not only is he full of energy, having not played much, he will also be full of enthusiasm and determination to show what he can do when he’s given the chance.
All that, combined with the setup of the game, will provide the perfect platform for the young Englishman. Southampton are going to sit deep and defend, and try to catch us on the break. That means he will be able to play super high up the pitch, hopefully using his weapon of a right foot to deliver great crosses and powerful shots.
Watch out Saints, there’s a storm coming.
