Why the Burnley match proves once again that Chelsea need another striker this window

This might seem like an odd headline to write after Chelsea have just won 3-0 against Burnley.

However, the result doesn’t show the whole story.

Frank Lampard chose not to use a single substitution yesterday, which is almost unheard of.

Tammy Abraham has been fantastic this season and scored another goal yesterday. But he is pretty much playing every game other than FA Cup matches, so to not haul him off for even a ten minute rest and give another striker a chance to improve their confidence, just shows how little trust Lampard has in his backup strikers.

Olivier Giroud has been largely unused and is almost definitely off to Inter. And Michy Batshuayi’s overall play just isn’t good enough.

Chelsea need another striker this month, I have no doubt about that. They are just one bad injury to Tammy Abraham away from dropping many more vital points.

Lampard played down a potential move for Moussa Dembele, and we know that they will have to wait to bring Timo Werner in.

So at this point, they just need a backup to Abraham who brings more to the table than Batshuayi, ideally one who can contribute across the front three.
