There is forever a debate amongst Chelsea supporters over what position is actually best suited for their French World Cup winning midfielder N’Golo Kante.
Some believe that he should be playing in the ‘Claude Makelele role’, made famous by Kante’s fellow Frenchman during his spell at Chelsea.
I firmly believe Kante could be moulded into a Makelele type of role. As Kante gets older, we’ve seen he won’t sustainably be able to exert himself all over the pitch. A deeper defensive role could allow him to flourish into his later years & still operate as an elite midfielder.

Others believe that he is better in a more advanced role, or at least in a midfield double pivot, allowing him more freedom to go box-to-box.
Kanté has never played as a sitting holding midfielder, didn’t do it at Leicester, under Conte, Sarri or Lampard. He’s always been box to box.

It is always a heated debate that splits opinions. But every manager he has had at Chelsea so far has never used him as a sole defensive midfielder, neither does he play there for France.
Now former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has waded in on the argument and has simply ended it in one clever sentence…
“In my opinion he can play in every position in the midfield” said the current Inter Milan boss, and to be honest, that probably just about sums up this discussion perfectly.
As reported by The Evening Standard, Conte was asked his views on where Frank Lampard should be playing Kante.
He continued..
“We are talking about an amazing player, a top player. He is fantastic with or without the ball and when you have N’Golo in your team you can think that you are playing with one player more. One of the best players I have had in my career as a coach.”
