Chelsea want Timo Werner but €55m clause is considered too much

Chelsea have been linked with Timo Werner for some time now, but it’s been a while since we had concrete confirmation on this level.

In a Tweet you can see below, Christian Falk, who is head of football at Bild, has just stated that the Blues, along with Man U and Liverpool, are all interested in the RB Leipzig striker, but all are being put off by his release clause of €55m.

That sum might not have seemed like much just a few months ago, but the coronavirus pandemic has hit football hard, and even those giants are clearly concerned about their cashflow – or at least concerned that a depressed market has pushed down the potential money they can raise through sales this summer.

Purely on the weight of rumours, and the fact they’re such a dominant team at the moment, one would have to assume that Liverpool are favourites to sign the striker.

But perhaps their reluctance to pay the asking price gives Chelsea an opportunity – if Roman decides he’s ready to dig deep into his pockets after all.
