The chatter last week about Chelsea being interested in recruiting Thiago Silva and Jose Maria Gimenez sounded like hopeful paper talk.
Chelsea need a dominant, experienced central defender, and given Silva is a free agent and Gimenez has been more or less put on the market (at the right price), it sounded like journalists were just putting two and two together.
But reports we’ve heard this week, like this exclusive on CaughtOffside, hint that there might be more to it than that.
They write that “everyone [at Chelsea] is getting excited” about the prospect of PSG man Silva joining, while Gimenez remains their “number one” target.
He still won’t be easy to prise away from Atletico Madrid, who rate him as a quality player despite accepting he might leave if a large enough offer is made.
While he did lose his place in the team at times last season, his replacement Felipe is a lot older, and Diego Simeone won’t let his young lieutenant leave without a fight.
