Mason Mount: “I am versatile and can play in a deeper role”

A lot has been said about what Mason Mount’s best position is and what gets the best out of him.

Personally, I feel he is best suited to the 8 role, getting up and back. I think although he is good as a 10, he brings more to a deeper role. I even like him in a 6.

Could Chelsea look to do a swap deal involving Tammy Abraham and Declan Rice? Read my latest here and find out!

As we know, for England he often operates in a 6 role as part of a double pivot, or in a deeper centre midfield position. This is what Gareth Southgate seems to prefer for him.

Right now at Chelsea, due to the formation and setup, Mount is operating more as a 10 and he is playing well.

Bottom line is he is versatile and can do a great job in any of the midfield positions, and he has even played out wide for Chelsea and as a false 9.

It is great to have that versatility, and it looks like he could be switching between a number of roles for club and country.

Mount has been speaking about this whilst on international break with England.

“I am always trying to improve,” the 22-year-old said as reported by The Guardian.

“I feel like I am versatile and can play in a deeper role and obviously in a more forward role. I’m always learning. I’m still young and I’m still learning.

“In terms of the formation, we are versatile as a team. In the modern game, you have to be ready to change if the other team are tactically different to what you have prepared for. We are ready for that definitely. I feel like I can play in any position and I just want to understand, more and more, different positions.”
