Chelsea look to secure new Andreas Christensen contract – but have little leverage

The Athletic are today reporting that Chelsea have opened contract talks with Andreas Christensen, whose current deal expire next summer.

He had a brilliant second half of the season with Thomas Tuchel in charge, and now is excelling with Denmark at the Euros. Just a year or so after looking like he would never fulfil his potential, he looks every bit the defender we hoped he would be.

It leaves Chelsea in a slightly tricky situation, and one that could become even more precarious. Unless he signs a new deal this summer, he will be into the last year of his deal, and able to sign a new contract with a foreign club come January.

Losing him on a free transfer would be a disaster, and even though the club will have to pay him a lot more now than they would have done if he’d signed a few years ago, it’s time to bite the bullet.
