“It was important” – Thomas Tuchel praises fringe player for his concentration

Chelsea are often praised for their strong squad depth this season and the quality of players available every week for Thomas Tuchel to select from.

He does have many great players, and he will be needing them all throughout the season as the games start coming in thicker and faster.

The backline will be one of the most important, and Chelsea will be needing to fill the void of losing top class goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy, who will be off the the African Cup of Nations in the new year.

Kepa Arrizabalaga is the backup choice, and he had a rare chance to start against Southampton in the Carabao Cup last night.

It was his important save in the penalty shoot out that helped put Chelsea through, and also he mad three or four top draw saves late in the game to keep it 1-1. This was after he made an error to let The Saints score.

Tuchel has praised his mentality and concentration after all of that to help see Chelsea through.

As reported by Sports Illustrated, Tuchel said:

“When everyone thinks about stoppage time and penalties it is a dangerous moment, you can lose concentration. It was important that Kepa kept us in the game with the double header save from the set pieces.”
