Earlier today we excitedly reported that Ben Chilwell had started running as part of his recovery from a knee injury suffered against Juventus three weeks ago.
The Athletic have now confirmed that the left back was indeed starting on some “light running”, but they make it clear that this does not yet indicate that Chilwell won’t need surgery.
Thomas Tuchel spoke a week after the injury was picked up and indicated that Chelsea’s strategy was to wait and see how the issue responded naturally, hoping to avoid invasive procedures.
So far it seems like things are going well – hence the return to some activity. But it should be clear that Chilwell isn’t out of the woods yet, and a bad reaction to this new stage, or at some point further down the line, could mean that he goes under the knife after all.
So while we can be happy he’s progressing, we shouldn’t celebrate too soon.
