Chelsea fans’ worst fears have been confirmed as reports by Nizaar Kinsella of Goal.com say that Ben Chilwell will have surgery on his knee problem.
It’s more than a month since the left back hurt himself in the win over Juventus, and he’d been seen running and doing some light work with the physios, raising hopes he would be able to return to action without requiring surgery.
But clearly progress hasn’t been good enough, and the medical staff have decided that surgery on the ACL is the only way forward.
That means all hopes of seeing him again this season have been dashed, and instead the England left back will be pushing for a return by next summer. Given the form he was in, that’s a devastating blow to him personally, as well as to Chelsea, who now look very short at left back, with just Marcos Alonso a natural there.
