Billy Gilmour says he “loves playing” under new manager as season salvage goes on

Dean Smith might not be able to save Norwich’s season, but he’s already saved Billy Gilmour’s.

The midfielder wasn’t getting a game under the manager’s predecessor, but under Smith he’s instantly become a regular.

The new coach is getting improved performances from the whole side, even if they’re still not getting the wave of points they will need if they want to stay in the Premier League.

Speaking after the narrow defeat to Man U, Gilmour was glowing about his experiences with the new gaffer.

“I love playing and working under the new manager. I think he has been really good with me so far. I just need to make sure I am putting in good performances to make sure I am playing every week,” the Scot said in quotes picked up by Football.London.

“It is a good squad in there, who are fighting for places and injuries are building up so I need to make sure I am on it every day in training to get the opportunity. Boys are excited, they want to do well and stay in this league.”

In the end, it doesn’t really matter for Gilmour’s development if the Canaries go down. As long as he’s playing every week, and in a team that makes the most of his skills, their position in May doesn’t matter that much.

All we know is that he won’t be battling at the bottom of the Premier League next season, no matter what happens.
