Chelsea enter the fourth stage of their season with Boxing Day clash against in form Aston Villa

Adrian Clarke’s analysis of Chelsea’s season so far, on the Premier League official site, ahead of the game against Aston Villa tomorrow reveals some interesting facts about the Blues’ season so far.

Breaking it into three 6 week sections – week 1 to 6, week 7-12, week 13-18 – he found that Chelsea’s clear chances generated from open play had fallen off dramatically.

Starting the season with 14 in 6 games, that rose to 19 as players settled in and got up to speed, before tumbling to just 10 over the last 6 games, as injuries bit.

That follows the pattern of the season so far as we’ve observed it too – a slow and steady start after the Euros where we did well without many outstanding performances, a superb run where we blew teams away and really clicked – and now a very difficult spell where we’ve struggled to keep our heads above water.

Let’s hope this next run of 6 games sees us get back into gear – starting with the tricky tie at Villa on Thursday.
