Chelsea’s return to form as mapped by their expected goals for and against took another step in the right direction against Aston Villa on Sunday.
According to stats site FBRef the Blues had 2.9 expected goals for, with just 0.6 against, and ran out 3-1 winners in the end. That was a significant step up from the 0.8 they created against Wolves, restoring them to the levels they’d shown against Zenit, Leeds and Everton before that (2.9, 2.8 and 27 respectively).
Villa were probably closer to a result than those numbers show, but the trend is very much back in the right direction, and tomorrow night’s clash with Brighton at home will hopefully see another similar mismatch.
After that the fixtures get a lot tougher, but we will go into those January games against Man City, Liverpool and Tottenham with much more hope if we produce another dominant xG showing against the Seagulls in the game tomorrow night.
