Chelsea have a lot of defenders out of contract next summer, as has been noted plenty of times.
Among that group, Antonio Rudiger has always felt like the most likely to leave, and Thiago Silva the most likely to stay.
Cesar Azpilicueta has tended on the “staying” side for sure. He’s club captain, still playing regularly, and seems a vital figure in the dressing room as well as a versatile option on the pitch.
But the longer we go without securing his signature, the more questions arise – and according to Dean Jones of Bleacher Report, those same questions are being asked in the dressing room.
He writes that some Chelsea players are “bewildered” by the fact that the captain hasn’t had his future secured, in particular because of the uncertainty about the rest of the back line.
We’re as mystified as they are, frankly. Let’s hope Azpi sets a precedent for the others by agreeing a deal soon.
