Chelsea’s players will have taken their final round of Covid tests this morning, knowing that a couple of positive results could mean tonight’s game against Brentford is called off.
The Blues already had a swathe of missing players, and if they add more in this round of testing they will likely his the magic number needed to request a postponement.
While that’s certainly a possibility, as it’s not a Premier League game, it seems likely the club will want to play even if it means using a cobbled together group of new faces. Thomas Tuchel yesterday insisted that he would prioritise the health of his first team squad, and not take any risks by playing overworked players.
That means it’s possible Chelsea will push to play the game regardless of today’s results, swapping in more youth team players for any new absences. Whatever the result, that will at least clear this game out of the schedule and allow the team to focus on Aston Villa, our opposition on Boxing Day.
