Thomas Tuchel is someone you can rely on to be decisive, and he acted at half time in this game when he didn’t like what he was.
Chelsea were level, but their formation wasn’t working, and Tuchel didn’t wait to change it. He took off Trevoh Chalobah at half time, switching to a back 4 and adding Romelu Lukaku as a presence up top.
It’s a nice idea – but minutes later the decision backfired totally. Having elected to take off Chalobah, who had been excellent, suddenly Thiago Silva was limping, and before long he had to be withdrawn for a half fit Andreas Christensen.
So Chelsea are now two subs down, with 40 minutes to play and just one change left. They’re playing an unfamiliar formation with two centre backs who have struggled in a back 4. It may require Christian Pulisic to switch to right wing back, with Reece James moving into the 3.
It’s a bitter blow for Tuchel, who has been effectively punished for his boldness. Still – on we go.
