Kepa links to Serie A won’t go away despite impossible situation

Edouard Mendy has settled in so well in 18 months at Chelsea that the Kepa Arrizabalaga situation has really receded into the background.

Yes we need to sell him, but the pressure and the attention is reduced now we have a really strong first choice. That’s a relief, because we’re in a fairly impossible situation there.

There’s no way we can accept a low fee for a player who cost us £72m, but there’s also no way we can keep him around until he leaves for free. Eventually we’ll find an equilibrium, but for now the stopper is sticking at the club mainly out of embarrassment.

There is one persistent link that keeps coming up though – as in Football Italia this week. Maurizio Sarri signed the Basque for Chelsea and apparently now wants him at Lazio.

We can see a loan happening, but anything more than that is probably wishful thinking. They just don’t have the cash to offer what we might accept for a permanent move at the moment.
