Marcos Alonso did some good work covering for Ben Chilwell at the start of this season as the England star recovered his form and fitness after a long summer.
Once Chilwell was back in the team and playing well, we didn’t expect to see that much more of Alonso, bar the occasional cup game. He could pretty much put his feet up for the rest of the season – or so we thought.
The knee injury that Chilly got against Juventus three weeks ago catapulted Alonso back into action, and he’s since been a starter in pretty much every game.
He spoke to the Chelsea official website today about the challenges of stepping into the breach to replace such an important player:
“It’s obviously never nice to see a team-mate injured and that’s the most important thing,” the 30-year-old explained.
“When you don’t play games, it’s always tough but trying to help the team win games is our main job.”
He’s not a natural fit for Tuchel’s system like Chilwell, and he’s struggled at times. But as Alonso has always done, he makes up for his mistakes with great moments, as we saw as he surged forwards against Leeds to assist Mason Mount for our opening goal.
