With the news that Ben Chilwell and Reece James are out for the rest of the season – or close to it – a move for a full back has risen to the top of Chelsea’s January agenda.
Their top target appears to be Lucas Digne of Everton, and it all looked like rather smooth sailing. Everton want to sell, he wants to go, and Chelsea want to buy.
The bad news is that ESPN’s latest report from James Olley claims that newly rich Newcastle also have an interest in the left back.
This will likely become a growing problem for other teams in the division, as the Magpies puff up prices as they cast around for players to try and help them avoid the drop.
Let’s hope that Digne is keen to play for the Blues in the Champions League rather than circle the relegation plughole with Newcastle, and can push the deal in our direction.
