Premier League to plough on despite Covid wave

The Premier League have had their long awaited “Monday meeting” and decided that they will continue the season without a blanked Covid break.

Games have been called off with increasing regularity in recent weeks as the Omicron variant sweeps across the UK, and teams have either missed matches, or played them with severely depleted teams.

Chelsea were in the latter camp, and after largely avoiding issues earlier in the season were struck by a host of absences for the matches against Everton and Wolves last week.

Individual games are still prone to be cancelled if teams can’t field enough players, with the magic number seeming to be 13 outfielders. Clubs can play any under 23s from their youth teams or reserves without restrictions.

Clearly the majority of teams are in favour of ploughing on, and while Chelsea have been hit hard this week, it’s probably the best solution for everyone as it stands.
