Thomas Tuchel has had a lot of press conferences recently, as the winter pileup of games continues, and given the difficult results his team have had in some of those games, we’ve seen some spiky responses from the Chelsea boss.
His message in the pressers has been clear – the performances haven’t been terrible, they’ve been average. But the team has slacked off after taking the lead, and as they’ve learned repeatedly now, you can’t do that.
That’s not just a message for the mics either, according to Tuchel. In his interview with the Chelsea official website today, he assured everyone that what he was saying in the dressing room was exactly the same as what he’s saying to the press.
“What I say on the microphone, you can be sure that I said it before in the locker room because I don’t give messages [to the players] over the microphone and camera. I give them straightaway and I give them to the whole team. There are no surprises in front of the camera or in press conferences,” Tuchel explained.
His players seem to really like working with him, and this will only help that. Coaches can always be strict, as long as they are straight with the players and defend them when they deserve to be defended.
On the other hand, when they’re in a bad spell like this, they can always do with a shot across the bows.
