Thomas Tuchel’s interview with the Chelsea official website ahead of tonight’s game is now up, and it’s all about the team’s recent defensive struggles.
One imagines the questions were asked a couple of days ago, before the coronavirus wave caught three further Chelsea players in it, and there might be a few different things asked if it was taking place now.
Overall, Tuchel echoed what we heard from him in some of the press conferences we’ve seen over the last few weeks. He refused to blame the tactical system of admit he would deviate from it, instead blaming other factors.
“No, I cannot see this [system being a problem]. We trust what we do and we use the same system to have consistent results and clean sheets. It is not like we only concede, we have also scored a lot,” the manager explained.
“My impression from the side-line is that the input defensively also from the strikers is still on highest level but some things maybe fell into place at the same time and it makes us feel more uncomfortable than it needs to be.”
It’s hard to disagree with him – it would be mad to turn on a system taht has brought so much success just because of some bad results. Clearly this setup brings out the best in a lot of our players, and flailing around trying to find something that works better is not a wise move in the middle of the season.
