Two January recalls being considered by Chelsea

Nizaar Kinsella of Goal.com is well connected at Chelsea, and according to his piece today there are two significant returns that could be on the cards this January.

Chelsea have suffered injuries at left back and in central midfield, and in the form of Ian Maatsen and Billy Gilmour they have fantastic talents out on loan in those positions.

Apparently the club will consider recalls for both – but we struggle to see them going through with either.

In Gilmour’s case, after sitting on the bench a lot he’s forced his way into the team under new manager Dean Smith, and is playing every game now. He would have had some starts in the last few weeks at Chelsea, but once the injury crisis is over, he would be straight back to the bench.

It’s the same story for Maatsen. Sure he could get a few games backing up Marcos Alonso at the moment, but once Ben Chilwell is back, the kid would be on the bench.

From what we can tell of Thomas Tuchel’s attitude, he’s not going to damage the development of these talents for a few minutes here and there. Unless there’s another serious injury, we expect them both to stay where they are.
